Easterly Road (Fforde Grene to Oakwood Lane Roundabout)

• Loss of green space

• Will cause delays for traffic

I presume that the proposal is for a bus and cycle lane city-bound only, although the diagram appears to show bus lanes in both directions. Also that the bus lane is in addition to the main carriageway so that there would continue to be two lanes available for general traffic. I suggest that it would be sufficient for the bus lane to extend back to Amberton Road only rather than the full distance to the Oakwood Lane roundabout. Although I am generally concerned about the loss of green verge and central reservation, the central reservation is wide enough in this location to enable this. I suggest that on road parking be banned during peak times in both directions between the Fforde Green and Oakwood Lane Roundabout. Consideration could be given to provision of an outbound cycle lane particularly on the uphill section from the Fforde Green to Arlington Road. There is scope to improve the corridor by planting additional trees on the grass verges to compensate for the loss of central reservation. The benefit of measures on Easterly Road will be limited by the congestion encountered on Roundhay Road / Harehills. I oppose the creation of parking laybys to provide off street parking on Easterly Road. The houses on Easterly Road have driveways so there should be no need for this. The grass verges and trees are an important part of the urban landscape and help to reduce air pollution and screen for noise. Their replacement with ‘hard surfaces’ would be detrimental. This corridor was originally included in plans for a tram system. Therefore any changes made in this corridor should be consistent with any emerging plans for MRT in Leeds.

Not Practical

OK in principle. At the Fforde Grene some traffic turns left into Easterly Road. Buses would need to cross this traffic to continue south on Roundhay Road. Therefore is a bus lane here practical? I assume that two lanes would continue to be available for general traffic. How would cycles be accommodated here? I suggest that the junction between Gledhow Valley Road and Roundhay Road should be signalised to allow traffic to exit from Gledhow Valley Road more easily. Also the junction between Roundhay Road and Harehills Avenue. The bus lane would be able to bypass any traffic lights at these junctions.

There is a large amount of land available here due to the legacy of the former tram line. 2+ lanes encourage car sharing although this length of route is unlikely to be of sufficient length to make a difference. The volume of traffic is limited by the capacity of the junction at the Fforde Green and Roundhay Road through Harehills.
