On Burmantofts street / Becket street, dedicated bus and cycling facilities would be a promising step forward, so it is excellent those are being planned. It would be important, however, to ensure cycle facilities are segregated (and unidirectional). The scheme would be particularly valuable for cyclists if it encompasses improvements to the junctions along the way: Burmantofts street and York road (in a way that would connect the new scheme with the existing CS) and Lincoln Green / Accommodation road and Beckett street (protected junction) in particular. The only clear negative of the scheme as it is is where it stops. It seems to extend only as far as Refectory street. That would be a missed opportunity - the junction with Alma road can be very stressful, as it forces northbound cyclists to compete for space with left-turning traffic (also, I don't think the central feeder is the 2m width called for in the LCDS, so this would be an opportunity to correct that), so improvements to that junction would be useful. More importantly, it also neglects to address the dangerous pinch point for northbound cyclists at the end of Bexley wing / where the old walls start. The lane narrows considerably here, and motor vehicles often do not compensate for that and end up dangerously close to people cycling.

The plans for York street seem positive. The improvement of facilities for buses is a good step in the improvement of links to the East, and the hospital in particular (which may have the knock-on effect of enabling people to change transit mode). Since a scheme is planned which would considerably reduce traffic flows through York street, there could be scope to revisit / improve some of the cycling facilities planned as part of the CS extension.

This is a key corridor connecting what is said to be the largest hospital in Europe with the city centre. The large amount of land along this corridor lends itself to the creation of bus lanes and with around 24 buses per hour on the route the potential benefit is large. A dedicated cycle route is also likely to be well used. Should the bus lane also be available for use by ambulances both emergency and non-emergency? Should taxis be allowed to use this bus lane? There may be a stronger case for this here as many taxis will be carrying hospital patients. The scheme is shown as finishing at Rectory Street which is well short of the hospital itself, therefore consideration should be given as to whether any improvements are possible on Beckett Street between Rectory Street and the main hospital entrance. This would be complicated by the presence of the Fountain Head Pub. The Beckett Street car park could be seen as an anomaly given provision of the multi-storey car park in the hospital site. The scheme should be seen as wider than a transport scheme and as an improvement scheme for the whole corridor between the Inner Ring Road and St James Hospital providing the opportunity to landscape the area to provide an attractive green route incorporating urban trees and other green features of urban realm. Many cyclists will want to access the city centre rather than the Inner Ring Road. Is there a need to consider the potential for a separate cycle route to the St Peter’s Street and The Headrow?

Makes sense as general traffic can go via Marsh Lane. However need a route for general traffic from Burmantofts Street to get to John Lewis car park!
